Speaker interview: Pupul Bisht

Speaker interview: Pupul Bisht

26.03.2021

“The future is not a distant place we are trying to find, but an emergent space that we must co-create.”

Speaking at the session:
11.15 Don’t miss the future

Pupul Bisht, futurist and multi-disciplinary designer, is the founder of the Decolonizing Futures Initiative. Through this initiative, Bisht is pioneering the use of her novel foresight method inspired by the Kaavad folk-storytelling tradition of Rajasthan, India, to engage historically marginalized communities in envisioning their preferred futures.

Why is it important to engage people in future envisioning?

“The Decolonizing Futures Initiative was born, fueled by the fiery desire to pluralize our imagination of possible futures and how we could imagine them. To change the future, we need to change the story. And not just what the story is and who it is about.

But also, who imagines the story and who gets to tell it.

I believe at the core of every single story about the future is a simple question what if? and therefore, in order to build new, diverse narratives, we need to ask what if? from new, diverse perspectives.

As we anticipate our collective futures on this planet, practical frameworks for reconciliation, tolerance and celebration of diverse views and ideas must be designed, promoted, and used.

While talking about “leaving no-one behind” is important, it was never going to be enough if we did not acknowledge that futures for all cannot be imagined by a few.”

What is it that you most want to tell to the World?

“The future is not a distant place we are trying to find, but an emergent space that we must co-create.”
